Kirsten Clark, student midwife
Pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Midwifery
at Midwives College of Utah, beginning May 2022

The journey begins...

When I began birth work, I said I would never be a midwife. Nope, no way.
The idea of holding that responsibility to keep a birthing person and their baby safe felt like far too much.

I said that... but sometimes, the Universe has other plans. At the end of 2020 I was visiting my beloved maternal grandmother for what would be the last time. On the drive home, it hit me like a bolt out of the blue: I am meant to be a midwife. This was nothing that had EVER crossed my mind and, in fact, I swore up and down for years that I never wanted to catch a baby! This felt like the most beautiful parting gift from my grandmother.

I felt so scared considering taking this step that I had never planned to take, but a calling is a calling -- so I chose to answer that call into midwifery. I am grateful to have begun my midwifery journey with over six years of birthwork experience and 110+ births under my belt, primarily hospital births. The familiarity with which my doula work gave me with the medical model of care has deeply informed my beliefs about birth and how birthing people deserve and need the full array of options. There is no right or wrong way to give birth.

While I am grateful to be on the path to providing home birth care, I am also grateful to have the collaborative relationships of hospital-based OBGYNs and CNMs who can provide my clients with a higher level of care when needed. I couldn't imagine trying to provide home birth care without their support.

Thank you for joining me on this journey to becoming an Alabama licensed Certified Professional Midwife!
